The spirit of Germany intellectualism is being evoked with this 4-metre tower of stacked books, cast in bronze, consisting of classical works by German authors from the Arts and Sciences, celebrating Germany’s pursuit of knowledge and desire for enlightenment.
This piece was created for the typisch deutsch? (typical German?) solo exhibition at the MAKK in Cologne, where Sachs aims to reappraise cultural labels, to question stereotypes and open a discourse on German identity in the twenty-first century. Viewers are asked to contemplate German archetypes and clichés from a different perspective, questioning the very essence of what it means to be typisch deutsch.
