In the piece ‘Romantik’ (romanticism) dark blue ink-drops fall from the nib of a fountain pen into a tank of water, creating organic clouds of colour; each one unique and transient, evoking the spirit and beauty of German Romanticism.
This piece was created for the typisch deutsch? (typical German?) solo exhibition at the MAKK in Cologne, where Sachs aims to reappraise cultural labels, to question stereotypes and open a discourse on German identity in the twenty-first century. Viewers are asked to contemplate German archetypes and clichés from a different perspective, questioning the very essence of what it means to be typisch deutsch.
