merino wool felt, brass shotput

In ‘Schwermut’ (melancholy) Sachs explores the ‘weight’ and ‘burden’ of melancholy, with a sculpture that subjects a delicate piece of felt to the pressure of a solid brass sphere; evoking the spirit and conflict of Schwermut.
This piece was created for the typisch deutsch? (typical German?) solo exhibition at the MAKK in Cologne, where Sachs aims to reappraise cultural labels, to question stereotypes and open a discourse on German identity in the twenty-first century. Viewers are asked to contemplate German archetypes and clichés from a different perspective, questioning the very essence of what it means to be typisch deutsch.
