metal cage, German 2nd World War army helmet, light bulb
H 68 × W 60 × D 60 cm
A sombre and quietly contemplative commemoration of the millions of lives lost during the two World Wars.
This piece was created for the typisch deutsch? (typical German?) solo exhibition at the MAKK in Cologne, where Sachs aims to reappraise cultural labels, to question stereotypes and open a discourse on German identity in the twenty-first century. Viewers are asked to contemplate German archetypes and clichés from a different perspective, questioning the very essence of what it means to be typisch deutsch.
