hand stitching on linen, glass

unique
‘Sorgfalt’ (meticulousness) pays homage to the historical traditions of German craftsmanship and artisan skills, by presenting an intricate, custom-embroidered piece of linen, which shows the ‘abc’ template; one of the first embroidery patterns taught in school, which is framed behind a glass panel.
This piece was created for the typisch deutsch? (typical German?) solo exhibition at the MAKK in Cologne, where Sachs aims to reappraise cultural labels, to question stereotypes and open a discourse on German identity in the twenty-first century. Viewers are asked to contemplate German archetypes and clichés from a different perspective, questioning the very essence of what it means to be typisch deutsch.
