biscuit porcelain from the Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg
H 40 × W 35 × D 20 cm
edition of 25
A handcrafted, oversized, seven-litre Maß tankard, produced in partnership with Nymphenburg Porzellan Manufaktur, celebrates the brewing traditions in Germany, while drawing attention to this unnoticed, yet familiar object. Often used boisterously, the use of white biscuit porcelain belies its traditional function and calls for the viewer to respond to its pure form, free of practical purpose, and represents the relationship between measure (Maß) and moderation.
This piece was created for the typisch deutsch? (typical German?) solo exhibition at the MAKK in Cologne, where Sachs aims to reappraise cultural labels, to question stereotypes and open a discourse on German identity in the twenty-first century. Viewers are asked to contemplate German archetypes and clichés from a different perspective, questioning the very essence of what it means to be typisch deutsch.
