240-litre Sulo bins, vinyl stickers

‘Pflichtbewusstsein’ (conscientiousness) is an affectionate satire on the German love of recycling. This installation of brightly-coloured bins interprets German conscientiousness with an ironic twist, offering an invitation to dispose of negative character traits, including envy, stubbornness, humourlessness and intolerance.
This piece was created for the typisch deutsch? (typical German?) solo exhibition at the MAKK in Cologne, where Sachs aims to reappraise cultural labels, to question stereotypes and open a discourse on German identity in the twenty-first century. Viewers are asked to contemplate German archetypes and clichés from a different perspective, questioning the very essence of what it means to be typisch deutsch.
